E-bike not starting? What to check first

Step-by-step checks when your e-bike won't start or move: key, battery switch, connectors, fuse, brake cut-off and controller. Stay safe.

Safety first

Move the bike off the road before you check anything. Switch the key off. Never open the battery pack or the controller box yourself: e-bike batteries carry enough power to cause burns or a fire. The checks below are only the simple, outside ones.

1. Nothing lights up at all

If the display and lights stay dark when you turn the key, the power isn't reaching the bike.

  • Is the battery charged? Try charging it for a while.
  • Many removable batteries have their own on/off switch or lock. Make sure it is on and the battery is pushed fully into place.
  • Look at the battery connector for loose, burnt or dirty pins.
  • Some bikes have a small fuse near the battery. A blown fuse is a common, cheap fix, but let a mistri replace it with the correct rating.

2. Lights come on but the bike won't move

This is very often a safety cut-off doing its job, not a real fault.

  • Brake cut-off: most e-bikes stop the motor while a brake lever is pressed. A stuck lever or a faulty brake sensor keeps the motor off. Squeeze and release both brakes a few times.
  • Side stand switch: some models won't run with the stand down.
  • Park or P mode: check the display for a P sign and press the P or mode button.
  • Throttle: a damaged throttle wire or loose plug can stop the bike. Look for cuts or pulled wires near the handle.

3. Error code or beeping

Many displays show an error number. Take a photo of it: it helps the mistri find the problem faster. Codes usually point to the controller, motor sensors, throttle or brakes. These need proper tools to check, so don't keep restarting the bike again and again.

When to stop and call a mistri

  • You smell burning, see smoke, or the battery or controller is hot.
  • The bike got wet or went through deep water and then stopped.
  • The simple checks above didn't work.

Still stuck? A checked mistri can help.
