E-bike in the rain: how to ride and care for it

Riding an e-bike in rain and flooded streets: what to avoid, what to do if water gets in, and how to dry and check it afterwards.

Light rain is usually fine

Most e-bikes can handle normal rain on the road. The real danger is standing water: in monsoon, many streets fill up, and water deep enough to reach the motor, battery or controller can cause serious damage.

What not to do

  • Don't ride through water deeper than the bottom of the wheel hub. If you can't see the road, don't go in.
  • Don't wash the bike with a pressure washer or pour water over the motor, display or battery.
  • Don't charge the bike while it or the charging port is wet.
  • Don't park it for hours in a spot where water collects.

Riding safely in rain

  • Brakes take longer to stop when wet. Ride slower and brake earlier and gently.
  • Avoid sudden full throttle on wet roads: the wheel can slip.
  • Watch for open drains and potholes hidden under water.
  • Keep your lights on so others can see you.

If the bike went through deep water

  • Switch the bike off and don't try to start it again and again.
  • Push it to a dry place and let it dry for at least a day, out of direct rain.
  • Don't open the battery or controller yourself.
  • Before riding again, get a mistri to check the wiring, connectors, motor and controller for water and rust.

After the monsoon

A quick check after the rainy season catches rust and loose connections early, before they leave you stuck on the road. Ask for the brakes, wiring and connectors to be cleaned and checked.

Still stuck? A checked mistri can help.
