Why it matters more on an e-bike
An e-bike is usually heavier than an ordinary bicycle and often goes faster, so the brakes and tyres work harder. A quick check once a month finds small problems before they become a fall or a breakdown.
The five-minute check
- Brakes: squeeze each lever. It should grip firmly before it touches the handlebar. If it feels soft or reaches the handle, get it adjusted.
- Brake pads: if the metal is showing or you hear scraping, the pads are finished.
- Tyres: check the air with your thumb or a gauge, and look for cracks, nails or worn-flat patches.
- Wheels and handlebar: hold the front wheel between your knees and twist the handlebar. Nothing should wobble or click.
- Lights and horn: switch them on and check they work.
Leave these to a mistri
If the brakes feel wrong, do not ride until they are fixed.
- Anything inside the motor, controller or battery.
- Brake cables that are frayed, or brake fluid on a hydraulic brake.
- A bent wheel or a loose handlebar that tightening does not fix.
